VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA–(Marketwired – Jun 10, 2013) – Tax Freedom Day, the day Canadian families have made enough money to pay off the total tax bill levied by all levels of government, falls on Monday, June 10 this year, according to the Fraser Institute’s annual calculations.

Tax Freedom Day arrives two days later than 2012 when it fell on June 8.

“Canadians are waiting an extra two days to celebrate Tax Freedom Day partly because governments across the country continue to increase taxes in an effort to make up for their overspending and deficits,” said Charles Lammam, Fraser Institute associate director of tax and budget policy and co-author of Canadians Celebrate Tax Freedom Day on June 10, 2013.

“What’s worse, some governments are relying on the most damaging types of tax increases including higher tax rates on personal income and investment, which will ultimately discourage economic growth.”

Among the tax increases announced so far are hikes to BC’s corporate income tax and top personal tax rate as well as its Medical Services Plan premiums; a new top income tax bracket in Quebec; increases to Manitoba’s Provincial Sales Tax and financial corporate capital tax; increases to New Brunswick’s corporate income tax and all four personal income tax rates; increased taxes on small businesses in PEI; cancellation of a corporate tax decrease in Saskatchewan; and increased Employment Insurance premiums federally.

Tax Freedom Day also comes later this year because Canada’s progressive tax system imposes a higher tax burden on families as their incomes increase.

Balanced Budget Tax Freedom Day

The report notes that Tax Freedom Day would arrive nine days later this year (on June 19) if the federal and provincial governments attempted to balance their budgets with additional tax increases.

“This year’s deficits are not trivial. Canadian governments expect deficits to total $34.0 billion, with $18.7 billion coming from the federal government and $15.3 billion from the provinces. Since today’s deficits must one day be paid for by taxes, Tax Freedom Day may come later in the future,” Lammam said.

“Of particular concern is Ontario, Canada’s largest province, with a deficit of $11.7 billion forecast this year. Tax Freedom Day would fall an astounding 14 days later on June 23 if the Ontario government raised taxes to cover its current deficit spending.”

From Liberty athletics:

COLUMBIA, S.C. Catcher Trey Wimmer knocked in a career-high six runs and right-hander Josh Richardson pitched his third complete game of the year, leading the Big South Champion Liberty Flames past the Clemson Tigers, 8-3, in Game 1 of the NCAA Columbia, S.C. Regional at Carolina Stadium.

Wimmer drove in a career-high six runs with two hits, a two-run double and three-run home run to go along with a run-scoring sacrifice fly. Playing in his home state, the Greenwood, S.C., native connected for his fifth round tripper of the year in the sixth inning to give Liberty a five-run cushion at the time.

After the third inning, Liberty starter Josh Richardson proceeded to handcuff the Tiger batters, holding Clemson scoreless during the following five innings, allowing the Flames to build an advantage. Starting with the second out of the third inning, Richard retired the next 17 Clemson hitters until right fielder Steven Duggar doubled to open the bottom of the ninth.

Richardson went the distance for the third time this season. The right-hander moves his record to 4-4. He gave up three runs on six hits over the full nine innings. He struck out one and did not walk a batter.

Third baseman Jake Kimble also collected three hits to tie his career-high and scored two runs for the Flames.

Playing in its first regional since 2000, Liberty runs it record to 35-27 on the year and advances to play the winner of this evening’s contest between Saint Louis and regional host South Carolina at 8 p.m. tomorrow, which will be televised on either ESPN3 or ESPNU.

Clemson drops to 39-21 and will play the loser of Saint Louis and South Carolina in an elimination game at 2 p.m.

With the win, Liberty records its first NCAA Regional victory since May, 27 2000, when the Flames defeated Seton Hall, 10-2, at the Columbia, S.C. Regional.

Big South Champion Liberty, the visiting team on the scoreboard due to its lower seed, jumped out to an early advantage by plating a run its first at bat. Right fielder Ashton Perritt led off the game by lining a ground rule double into the left-center field gap. After moving to third base on a ground out by center fielder Ryan Cordell, Perritt scored on a sacrifice fly by Wimmer for 1-0 edge.

Freedom Fest wouldnt be what it is without the participation of the community. This year, when the people of Murray come together to enjoy food, friends and music, the faces in the crowd we hope to recognize most are those of our countrys veterans. Home of the Brave is the theme of the 2013 FNB Freedom Fest Parade, taking place June 29.

In keeping with the theme, the FNB Bank Parade will honor our nations veterans as grand marshals. The parade begins at 9:30 a.m. featuring various community groups and their patriotic floats, cars and of course, candy.

We are so fortunate to be able to celebrate like we do, said Erin Carrico, executive director of the Murray Convention and Visitors Bureau. Its the perfect time to celebrate the people who give us freedom throughout the years – our veterans.

Carrico said she is excited to see the entries for the parade, as they are always new and exciting.

I think, with the theme, well see impressive entries from all of the participating organizations. Everyone is always eager to show their hard work, and now theres the added bonus of paying tribute to our veterans. We hope to see good use of our nations colors.

The parade route begins at 10th St. and Main, passing across the Court Square, ending in the Briggs & Stratton parking lot. The lineup process will begin at 8 a.m. to ensure a prompt 9:30 a.m. parade start.

Individuals and groups interested in being a part of the parade can download an application from www.tourmurray.com or call (270) 759-2199. Participation is free and the deadline to turn in an application in Friday, June 14. Late applications will not be accepted.

There will be a Veterans Remembrance Ceremony in Chestnut Park at the Veterans Memorial on July 4, at 7:30 a.m. All veterans and community members are invited to attend. For a complete schedule of Freedom Fest activities visit the website or like Freedom Fest on Facebook.

This year we invite residents to share kind words with our veterans with the use of social media. Go to facebook.com/murraykentucky and write on our wall, or tweet your thanks using #freedomfestky on Twitter. The Murray CVB will compile the responses and distribute them to the veterans participating in the FNB Bank Freedom Fest Parade, commented a CVB spokesperson.

More than 50 English beaches have met tough new EU standards to receive Blue Flag awards for 2013.

And a further 113 beaches in England are clean enough to get Seaside Awards (formerly Quality Coast Awards).

The results were announced by Keep Britain Tidy which administers the Blue Flag and Seaside Awards schemes in England.

The Blue Flag 55-beach total for 2013 is down on the 79-beach total for last year but beaches this year were subject to much tougher standards. They had to meet a new “excellent” standard required under the new EU Bathing Waters Directive.

Beaches also had to provide information to beach users advising where they can obtain real time information on discharges from nearby combined sewage overflows, if that discharge could temporarily affect the bathing water quality.

The region with the most Blue Flags this year, with eight, was Thanet in Kent, whose resorts include Margate and West Wittering. The Dorset regions of Poole and Bournemouth had four Blue Flags, as did Torbay in Devon and the Isle of Wight, which also had 13 Seaside Awards.

Other well-known beaches which were awarded Blue Flags this year included Central Beach in Skegness, Lincolnshire; Lowestoft South Claremont in Suffolk; Martello Bay at Clacton-on-Sea in Essex, and Whitby in Yorkshire.

Keep Britain Tidy operations director Richard McIlwain said: “It is fantastic news for everyone who loves visiting the seaside that so many beaches’ places will be flying a flag that guarantees the public the best facilities and the cleanest beaches this summer.”

He continued: “We campaign to improve the quality of our local environment and we know that communities up and down the country love their beaches and understand what an asset they are for their towns’ economies.

“We also know that cleaner beaches can be a focal point for stronger communities. Holidaymakers and daytrippers want to visit clean, safe beaches and the sight of the Blue Flag or Seaside Award flying gives them the reassurance that they will.”

Mumbai, May 21 — Looks like Varun Dhawan is in the mood to experiment. After playing a high school boy in Student Of The Year (2012), the actor will now play a mainstream character in father David Dhawan’s Main Tera Hero (MTH). And we have learnt that Varun, in all likelihood, will star in Sriram Raghavan’s next yet-untitled action-thriller, which will be produced by Saif Ali Khan’s Illuminati Films.

“Nothing is on paper yet because the discussions are in the initial stages. But Varun has been in talks with Sriram about it. They have had a few meetings too. It’s going to be a typical Sriram Raghavan-style thriller and Varun will start shooting for it once he wraps up MTH, which should be either by the end of the year or by early 2014,” says an insider close to the development.

At the moment, Varun is busy preparing for his father’s next directorial, which also stars Ileana D’Cruz and Nargis Fakhri. “Varun has always been a big fan of Sriram, but he is in no hurry to start work on the project because he will be busy with MTH till the end of the year. He wants to take on one project at a time,” adds the insider.

Not much is known about the story since Sriram is apparently still finishing the script. The insider adds, “None of them want to talk about it before things get finalised.” When contacted, Varun only says, “I can’t comment about it (the film) at all.”

‘I’m not dating Alia’

Varun Dhawan isn’t amused about reports linking him to his Student Of The Year (2012) co-star Alia Bhatt. A news report also suggested that he accompanied Alia to the story narration of her films too. “I’m not dating Alia. In fact, I have never dated her. I am equally close to both Sidharth and Alia; they are both my friends. But since Alia happens to be a girl, people make conjectures about us. It’s not true at all.”

Media holdings company Liberty Media (NASDAQ: LMCA) , controlled by deal maker and billionaire John Malone, continues to outperform with a strong roster of assets. The biggest boost to the company’s most recent earnings report: perennial Fool favorite Sirius XM (NASDAQ: SIRI) . One thing that can concern investors and analysts, though, is the ability for conglomerates to continue delivering value after successful runs. Is Liberty readying for a new acquisition, a new spinoff, or both? Let’s take a look at recent earnings for clues about the future of the company.

Earnings recapFor the first quarter, Liberty Media posted revenues of $789 million. In the year-ago quarter, that number was just $35 million, but investors need to note that this year’s figure includes $635 million worth of subscriber revenue — a figure absent from prior earnings.

Moving down the income statement, the company brought in $262 million in EBITDA, up 26% year over year. The company does not provide per-share figures.

Other highlights beyond the financial statements include the company’s new 27.3% stake in cable operator Charter Communications (NASDAQ: CHTR) . Liberty now represents four board seats at Charter and it is likely that Liberty will continue to build ownership of the company.

The most encouraging segment, by far, was Sirius XM. Regardless of whether Sirius investors were approving of its takeover or not, the company is performing at record levels. For the quarter, Sirius gained 453,000 subscribers to bring the total to a company record of 24.4 million. Jim Meyer was named the new CEO of the satellite radio provider.

What now?Liberty has had a strong run since its current incarnation debuted on the markets — up 11% since early January. The company recently spun off premium cable company Starz (NASDAQ: STRZA) , which has had a phenomenal run of nearly 90% since November of last year and, according to Liberty CEO Greg Maffei, is in prime place to be acquired.

Investors should take note of the company’s recent debt financing of $1.4 billion. This allows the company not only to grow its stake in positions such as Charter, but to look elsewhere for new targets as well. John Malone is a deal master, and has no intention of stopping now that Sirius is under his control.

At just over 10.5 times trailing earnings, and even cheaper looking a couple of years down the line, Liberty is a very reasonably priced stock with strong capital appreciation potential. I have faith in both Malone and Maffei as effective, shareholder-friendly leaders who will guide the company through more bolt-on acquisitions and, if necessary, spinoffs. Investors are wise to take notice of either.

A Sirius matter Despite Sirius XMbeing one of the market’s biggest winners since bottoming out three years ago, there is still some healthy upside to be had if things go right for it — and plenty of room for it to fall if things don’t. Read all about Sirius in The Motley Fool’spremium report. To get started, just click here now.

AMD’s next generation “Volcanic Islands” GPUs will be arriving later this year.

Rage3D recently went on a tour of AMDs Austin Campus and sat down with the companys CPU Architect, Jim Keller, and its Business Transformation Officer (BTO), Checkib Akrout. The discussion covered the company’s future plans, its new CPU architectures, and provided the long awaited confirmation that the Volcanic Islands GPUs will arrive this year.

The Sea Islands codename encompasses the PS4 chip, as well as the new mobile chips announced at CES, and the Bonaire GPU found in the Radeon HD 7790. I bring this up because it shows the people inside AMD continue to work hard, long hours to deliver great products amongst the turmoil shown in the press.

The next generation of graphics cards — Volcanic Islands — is coming this year and shaping up nicely. When you name products after places, it leads to interesting thoughts about where to hold events surrounding that namesake product. Typically places that are cheap to get travel to internationally for a worldwide congregation are preferred, so I’m off to renew my passport on the off chance I’m headed to Reykjavik later this summer. But I sure as hell wouldn’t complain about being sent to Honolulu, either.

Avoid gaming bottlenecks and keep your system balanced with the latest information abou…

Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI.PH) said Thursday first-quarter net profit rose 43% from the year-earlier period, helped by double-digit growth in loans and gains on securities trading.

BPI, the Philippines’ third-largest lender by assets, posted a net profit of 8.4 billion Philippine pesos ($204 million) in the January-March quarter, up from PHP5.88 billion in the year-earlier period.

The bank said in a statement that net loans reached PHP514 billion at the end of the first quarter, up 19% from the same period a year earlier. It added that total revenue was up 21% because of a “favorable market condition” that allowed the bank to book gains in securities trading.

Operating costs reached PHP6.6 billion, up 7% on year.

LOS ANGELES (AP) Starving sea lion pups are washing up on Southern California beaches at a rate more than five times higher than usual, and scientists are scrambling to figure out why.

Since the beginning of the year, 1,293 emaciated sea lions found stranded on beaches from San Diego to Santa Barbara have been treated at seven facilities in the state, Sarah Wilkin of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Wednesday during a conference call with reporters.

The number is a record for strandings of live California sea lions along the Southern California coast from Jan. 1-April 30 since 1982, when formal record-keeping began. The low was 25 sea lions in 2000. The previous high was 659 in 1998, when the Pacific experienced a strong ocean-altering El Nino.

Last month, the agency declared an “unusual mortality event” that allowed more scientists to help search for the cause.

A leading hypothesis is lack of available food. Researchers were also doing tests to see if pollution, disease outbreak or algae bloom are to blame.

Currently there is no El Nino, the ocean-warming phenomenon that makes it harder for female sea lions to find food and often leaves them unable to provide milk to their pups, according to NOAA. Pups are born in May and June and depend on their mothers’ milk through the following April or May. NOAA said pups don’t usually leave their mothers as early as they did this year.

Most of the pups being treated weighed between 20 and 30 pounds when they were found, with some as small as 18 pounds. The animals should weigh about 65 pounds by now, she said.

As many as 25 percent of the seals have died after being brought in for treatment.

The surviving seals are slowly brought up to a normal body weight and monitored to make sure they can find prey on their own and compete with other animals in tanks.

The goal is to get them healthy enough to be released back into the wild. Such releases are happening daily at some facilities, Wilkins said.

Arizonas tax burden appears to be easing this year, even as the national tax bill rises, according to a new study.

Arizonas tax freedom day arrived five days earlier this year, on April 5, than it did in 2012, the Tax Foundation reported. The nations tax-freedom day comes five days later this year, on April 18, the Tax Foundation reported.

The group cited higher personal income taxes from the fiscal cliff budget deal and expiration of a payroll-tax holiday for the increased federal levy this year. New taxes associated with the Affordable Care Act also played a role in lengthening the nations average tax burden.

Tax-freedom day is an illustration of how long it would take to pay all state, local and federal taxes, assuming those taxes are paid before other expenses. Along with taxes, it also is a function of how much taxable income or revenue residents earn. In that sense, Arizonas lower burden could reflect falling property values and other fallout from the recent economic downturn.

Property values track at least a year behind, said Kevin McCarthy, president of the Arizona Tax Research Association.

Also, Arizonans personal income has been muted another factor that could be contributing to the lessened burden.

The recession hit Arizona harder than nearly any other state, which could explain why the burden went down, McCarthy said.

Although a temporary 1-cent-per-dollar increase in the statewide sales tax will end this spring, there havent been any legislative tax cuts that would explain the lessened tax burden, McCarthy said.

Elizabeth Malm, an economist at the Tax Foundation who helped compile the study, also said discrepancies in the timing of tax and economic data received for the various states could be a factor. The large change is likely due to revisions in federal data not being reflected, she wrote in a note.

Connecticut this year has the latest tax-freedom day, equating to the heaviest tax burden. It wont come in that state until May 13. Mississippi and Louisana tied for the earliest tax-freedom day, March 29.
