MESA, AZ (AP) –
Islands made out of thick, tall reeds are surfacing on Saguaro Lake northeast of Phoenix creating hazardous conditions for boaters. The U.S. Forest Service says the islands vary in size and are visible in the daylight but are harder to see when the sun goes down.
The islands appeared recently and were seen floating around the boat ramp and the marina.
Mesa Ranger District spokesman Jason Scow says crews are trying to drag the islands to the shoreline, but it's not easy because the lake level rises and falls and the islands get pulled back in the water.
Scow says that none of the other Salt River lakes above Saguaro Lake have any floating islands.
