East Rennell Region in Solomon Islands Placed On UN List of World Heritage in Danger

New York, Jun 18 2013 – The East Rennell area in the Solomon Islands was inscribed today on the United Nations Scientific, Cultural, and Educational Organizations (UNESCO) list of endangered sites due to logging that is affecting the islands ecosystem.

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee determined that logging is threatening the outstanding universal value of East Rennell, and asked the national authorities to provide an impact assessment study of this activity, which is taking place outside the sites core area, UNESCO said in a news release.

East Rennell is the largest raised coral atoll in the world and its dense forest has a canopy averaging 20 metres in height. The forests, which cover most of the land area of the 37,000-hectare site, are an essential component of the atoll, which is considered to be a natural laboratory for scientific study.

Inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1998, the site makes up the southern third of Rennell Island, the southernmost island in the Solomon Island group in the western Pacific.

The List of World Heritage in Danger is designed to inform the international community of threats to the outstanding universal values for which a property has been inscribed, and to encourage corrective action.

In other news, the Committee yesterday removed the Iranian World Heritage site of Bam and its cultural landscape from the list of sites in danger citing improvements in the management and conservation of the site.

Bam was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2004, shortly after it was struck by a major earthquake. Damage caused by the quake warranted the sites simultaneous inscription on the List of Heritage in Danger.

The Committee, which is currently holding its 37th session in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, noted that remains of the desert citadel had been sufficiently stabilized and its management was sound enough for the site to be declared safe.

For those of us who worry about the vitality of free speech in the land of the free, the news this week isnt good.

On June 10, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to review a Colorado appeals court decision banning anti-abortion activists from displaying gruesome images of mutilated fetuses that might be seen by children.

The case that precipitated the appealsw court ruling, Scott v. St. Johns Church in the Wilderness, concerns an anti-abortion protest that took place several years ago on a public sidewalk near a Denver church a church the protesters believed had fallen away from the teachings of the Bible by supporting abortion.

Although the protest couldnt be seen or heard from within the church, the demonstration was timed to coincide with the churchs outdoor Palm Sunday procession.

Parishioners, including children, could look across the street and see the graphic images carried by the picketers.

According to the appeals court, censoring the speech of anti-abortion protesters is justified because the state has a compelling interest in protecting children from certain images of aborted fetuses and dead bodies.

The courts concern for the sensibilities of children is understandable. But consider the dangers of restricting content of political speech in public spaces merely because children might be disturbed by the message.

As the petition asking the Supreme Court to overturn the decision points out, children under 12 are present in many locations. They often come with their families to parks. They accompany their parents to go shopping. Their parents drive them down streets, from which they can see protesters on sidewalks. If the decision below is allowed to stand, speech in all these places could be restricted.

Moreover, compelling pro-lifers to tone down their message in public places deprives the movement of one its most effective tools.

Opponents of abortion use graphic images precisely because photographs convey a message about what they believe is the brutality of abortion a message that cant be delivered in words alone.

Ban on ‘gruesome images’ threatens free speech

KYIV, Ukraine, June 13, 2013 /PRNewswire/ —

An independently-conducted poll has found most Ukrainians believe freedom of speech is alive and well in their country, a finding in line with the Government’s efforts to alter perceptions that it has failed to move away from its Soviet past.

The study conducted by the Democratic Initiatives Fund and the Razumkov Center found that just seven percent of respondents believe Ukraine has no freedom of speech while 65 percent believe the nation does have freedom of speech. A tenth of those questioned gave their country the maximum score.

The results are a big improvement on a similar poll in 2011 in which 33 percent said Ukraine has freedom of speech.

Half of those questioned believe the media in Ukraine presents varying viewpoints and they trust Ukrainian media (58 percent) more than they do Russian information sources (33percent).

The survey results will doubtless be welcomed by those close to Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who has in the past bemoaned the “mistaken stereotype regarding the lack of freedom of speech.”

He has frequently pointed out that his government has left behind its Soviet past and enacted freedom of information laws.

“These latest survey results don’t surprise us. You only have to look at our vibrant digital media and blogosphere in Ukraine to see the broad range of opinions in our society,” a Ukrainian government spokesman said. The survey found a third of Ukrainians get their news online.

“But unfortunately there are still those who chose not to see the changes that have taken place in our nation,” he added.

TUCSON, Ariz.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–

Liberty Star Uranium & Metals Corp. (Liberty Star or the Company) (LBSR: OTCQB) is pleased to announce that it has completed a non-brokered private placement with a private US accredited investor for proceeds totaling USD $50,000. There was no brokerage commission paid.

The Company will use the funds for payment toward the current ZTEM survey program over Liberty Stars Hay Mountain property. With this funding, the ZTEM program announced in NR 152 will be paid in full. Geophysical electromagnetic and magnetic data collected by the ZTEM survey will be processed and interpreted by Geotech Ltd. in collaboration with Liberty Star within about two weeks after the overflight of the Hay Mountain property and its environs. Porphyry coppers, other mineral bodies and geologic features have distinctive characteristics which can be detected and interpreted by ZTEM technology which allows modeling or seeing conductive or resistive features from a few hundred feet (100 meters) to depths as much as 6,000 feet (2,000 meters).

Current Hay Mountain ZTEM survey update:

Geotech has sent word that the survey aircraft has left the Toronto area today and is expected to arrive in Sierra Vista, Ariz., about Saturday, June 8th. There will be about three days setup of ground geophysical recorders and base camp computers. When that is complete the ZTEM overflight should begin, barring unfavorable operational or weather issues.

In the News ‘Islamist attack against Free Speech continues’ – Video

Jun 012013

The framers of our Constitution assumed a vigorous and inquisitive press was essential to a free people, so much so their very first amendment specifically and unambiguously forbade government to make any law that would stifle its work. We can presume, and this the courts have ruled, that by extension government cannot forbid news reporters to ask questions, or otherwise seek out information.

The Justice Department seems not to have bought the concept. It contends a mere question can be a crime. Gathering news can be classified as a criminal act, at least to justify secretly reading a reporters emails and tracking his whereabouts. It presumed the leaking of government information justified seizing two months of telephone records for reporters of the Associated Press, including their cell and home phones, to scrutinize their sources and convert their contacts into a list of criminal suspects.

For this the Obama administration and Attorney General Eric Holder seem conveniently contrite, but far from repentant. Holder himself signed the subpoena that said Fox News reporter James Rosen was a suspected co-conspirator for asking a government employee for information, and when this was publicly revealed two years later, suddenly expressed remorse, and set up off-the-record meetings with Washington bureau chiefs to seek balance between press freedom and law enforcement.

The balance needs to tip much farther toward a commitment to freedom of the press and rights of the First Amendment. The proper balance should include a vow to make no effort to restrict the press ability to report the news. That is the Constitutions minimal requirement. Proper balance would include an on-the-record agreement not to use journalists as unwitting spies in a scheme to trap their confidential sources. The press is not free to gather and report, if all who contact reporters land on the governments list of possible criminals. Proper balance would include not accusing reporters of crimes or fishing through their emails, simply for exercising their First Amendment rights.

Freedom requires a press free to function, free to gather and report the news. Government must commit to that. Say it on the record.

Liberty Star Uranium & Metals Corp. (Liberty Star or the Company) (LBSR: OTCQB) is pleased to announce that Geotech Ltd. will be mobilizing its Caravan aircraft with the ZTEM package installed on Saturday, June 1, from its air operations base near Toronto, Canada, assuming permissible weather conditions. They should arrive at Libby Airfield, Sierra Vista, Cochise County, Arizona, near the Hay Mountain Project June 2nd/3rd with final preparations for ZTEM flying complete by the end of the week.

ZTEM overflight of the Companys Hay Mountain claim block should start about June 7th and take approximately two weeks. All flight schedules are dependent on permissible weather, and other operating conditions.

Liberty Star previously announced the overflight would be scheduled July 5th or earlier if possible (NR 152). The flight stage of the program should take about one to two weeks depending on conditions. Data compilation and analysis will follow. Liberty Star will receive 2D and 3D modeling images within approximately a month.

States Company CEO and Chief Geologist Jim Briscoe: “Once again Geotech has proven to be an outstanding partner as we seek to move forward on a key project. The early June date has several logistical advantages, chiefly favorable weather conditions, and I am pleased we can get started so soon. Once we look at the data, drill targets can be placed with greater precision. While permitting and funding will determine how fast we can mobilize, I do expect to get drills in the ground at Hay Mountain within a few months.

ZTEM Overflight of Liberty Star’s Hay Mountain Property to Begin First Week of June

Beijing (China Daily/ANN) – The 1945 Potsdam Proclamation, a statement of terms for the unconditional surrender of Japan issued in the names of the United States, China and the United Kingdom, determined that the terms of the Cairo Declaration shall be carried out, including that China’s northeast regions, Taiwan Island, Penghu Islands and its surrounding islands, should return to China.

The Diaoyu Islands are not within the Japanese sovereignty outlined by the declaration.

Mei Zhaorong, former Chinese ambassador to Germany, said this document is historical and legal evidence of China’s ownership of the islands, while Li’s presence there warns the Japanese right-wing forces not to try to deny the achievements of the world anti-fascist war.

Tokyo last September illegally “nationalised” the Diaoyu Islands, which have belonged to China – one of the victors of World War II – for centuries. Japan’s relations with China and South Korea became further strained under the hawkish Abe administration, which vowed to hike defense spending and loosen restrictions of the 1947 pacifist constitution.

Meng Hong, an expert on German studies at Renmin University of China, said the venue highlighted a sharp contrast between Japan and Germany’s self-reflection on its crimes during World War II.

“Germany has thoroughly repented while Japan is still messing around,” she said. “But Japan cannot erase its crimes.”

Meng said the Potsdam Proclamation also marked the beginning of China’s participation of dealing with international affairs through negotiation. “China, now a major global power, aims to underline the importance of peaceful communication in the face of disputes,” she added.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Thats the full text of the First Amendment. But (with apologies to the old Far Side comic) this is what many in the press, academia and government would hear if you read it aloud: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, blah blah blah, or abridging the freedom of the press, blah blah blah blah.

Dont get me wrong: That the Obama Justice Department has gone to unprecedented lengths to hamper or punish journalists is real news.

DOJ trawlers dropped a gill net over The Associated Press in the hope of landing a single fish. James Rosen, a reporter for Fox News (where Im a contributor), is the first journalist ever treated as a criminal under the Espionage Act. Other reporters at Fox a news outlet Obama has spent years trying to delegitimize have been investigated by the DOJ as well.

The press can always be counted upon not just to speak up for itself, but to lavish attention on itself. And thats fine. Whats not fine is the way so many in the press talk about the First Amendment as if its their trades private license.

The problem is twofold. First, we all have a right to commit journalism under the First Amendment, whether its a New York Times reporter or some kid with an iPhone shooting video of a cop abusing someone.

I understand that professional journalists are on the front lines of the First Amendments free-press clause. But many elite outlets and journalism schools foster a guild mentality that sees journalism as a priestly caste deserving of special privileges. Thats why editorial boards love campaign-finance restrictions: They dont like editorial competition from outside their ranks. Such elitism never made sense, but its particularly idiotic at a moment when technology Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Vine, etc. is democratizing political speech.

Second, the First Amendment is about more than the press. First Amendment experts and watchdogs are really scholars and activists specializing in the little slice dedicated to the press. The Newseum, a gaudy palace in the nations capital celebrating the news industry, ostentatiously reprints the entire First Amendment on its facade. But if the curators of the Newseum are much interested in the free exercise of religion or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, Ive seen no evidence of it.

White House press secretary and former journalist Jay Carney repeatedly insists that the president is a strong defender and firm believer in the First Amendment.

Southend beaches lose blue flag status

2:10pm Thursday 23rd May 2013 in News

NONE of Southends beaches will be flying Blue Flags as a mark of water quality this summer.

Changes in the criteria by whichthe Keep BritainTidy organisation judges the nations beaches mean all seven in the borough have lost out.

Leisure bosses are blaming the news on tougher rules and heavy rain, which washed debris and waste into the estuary during the winter.

However, Derek Jarvis, Southend councillor responsible for culture and tourism, has predicted the news wont stop families flocking to the seaside this summer as usual.

He said: The benchmark has changed, so the water quality levels are higher and impurities allowed are lower.

This has been imposed by Europe.Icould get political about it, but its where were at unfortunately and there is no appeal on this.

Its disappointing, but I dont think it will stop people coming to Southend to enjoy the beach, to enjoy sunbathing, going on the pier and all the cultural things we have going on.

Southend Seafront Business Association chairman Simon Patterson agreed.
