NEW YORK Lady Liberty will reopen just in time to celebrate the Fourth of July eight months after 75 percent of Liberty Island was submerged during the devastation of superstorm Sandy.

Crews have been working to repair Liberty Islands docks and replacing at least 53,000 bricks used to pave the islands promenade grounds.

Mold and saltwater destroyed electrical, telephone and radio infrastructure after basements were flooded, including that of the Statue of Liberty, said Linda Friar, National Park Service spokeswoman. The monument did not suffer flood damage, she said.

Several buildings on the island will not be rebuilt, however, including the home of the islands superintendent. A two-story administrative building will be rebuilt with its electrical system relocated to the second floor.

We are delighted that Lady Liberty will once again be open to the public, said David Luchsinger, superintendent of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island.

The devastation wrought by Hurricane Sandy crippled our operations, he said, adding that emergency funds from Congress helped pay for repairs and the rebuilding effort.

The island will have new and additional security-screening facilities.

Preliminary screening will be on Ellis Island, and secondary screening on Liberty Island, Luchsinger said. He said visitors will be subject to modern screening and detection technology.

The new system on Ellis Island replaces the facilities at Liberty State Park, N.J., and in lower Manhattans Battery Park, which were destroyed.

Luchsinger said the park service will boost security measures at Battery Park, Liberty State Park and on board the ferries.

Despite all its lousy weather and rain, Britain still has some of the greatest beaches in the world. After all, millions and millions of years ago, Britain was once a tropical paradise and those yellow sands and crystal clear waters still exist.

Ok maybe I’m exaggerating a bit but theres still plenty to do from sailing to fishing to crab catching. Heres a list of Britain’s most charming beaches.

Porthcurno Beach,Cornwall

One of the most stunning beaches in the UK is without a doubt Porthcurno. Spread out on the Atlantic coast of the most westerly bit of Cornwall, Porthcurno is famous for its secluded beach, stunning cliffs, beautiful white sea shell sand and translucent water. Not far is the Parish of St Levan and Land’s End, Britain’s most westernly point, where you can find everything that meets your fancy from pubs and restaurants to beautiful cottages and b&bs.

Lundy Island

Located between England and Wales, this is the largest island in the Bristol Channel and is voted one of the top ten British wonders. The population makes up a massive 28 people and there is hardly anything on the island but a pub, a shop and a few darn good beaches.. It’s very popular with climbers and there are plenty of good crags on the cliffs with a few bolted routes but mostly trad. Scrambles are quite long and steep so good shoes are of upmost importance.

The Gower Peninsula, Wales

A big open space with lots of beautiful rocks, the Gower has brilliant surf, historic landmarks, caves, dramatic cliff tops, treks, panoramic views and stunning unspoiled beaches. Pretty bloody good! The campsites are cheap and a must during the summer. Very popular with surfers and climbers.

Bridlington North, east coast of Yorkshire

This stunning shingle beach lies just north of beautiful Hull. Its perfect for sailing, relaxing and taking in the stunning Flamborough chalk cliffs. There are plenty of B&Bs, camp sites and even farms where you can stay and get some work.

Yesterday at 7:54 PM The Island Times covered stories about the Casco Bay islands that didn’t interest larger papers.

By Tom Bell tbell@mainetoday.com Staff Writer

The Island Times, a free monthly newspaper covering the Casco Bay islands, has printed its final edition.

In a brief notice on the front page of its May issue, the newspaper blamed shrinking advertising revenue and declining readership.

“We hope you’ve enjoyed the paper as much as we enjoyed producing it,” the unsigned notice said.

Publisher Kevin Attra could not be reached for comment Friday.

The newspaper was first launched a decade ago. Attra has been publisher for the last five years.

The newspaper’s 12-page final edition features a story by Attra on the Peaks Island Council’s decision to endorse a proposed new skate park.

The newspaper’s Community Events Calendar noted the 11:15 a.m. “step off” time for the annual Memorial Day parade, the rummage sale on the same day at Brackett Church, and the May 18 Loaf and Ladle Dinner at the Peaks Island Baptist Church to raise money for the island’s energy assistance program.

The newspaper covered stories that didn’t interest larger newspapers, said Nancy Jordan, director of the Long Island Community Library.

Without a doubt, some of the countrys finest beaches can be found in the coastal waters of Davao Gulf.

The Gulf has an area of 308,000 hectares that cuts into the island of Mindanao from the Celebes Sea and is surrounded by all four provinces in the Davao Region, and likewise circled by seven cities, namely: Davao, Tagum, Panabo, Samal, Digos, Panabo, and Mati.

The largest island in the gulf is Samal Island. While Davao City, on the Gulfs west coast, has the largest and busiest port.

AMANDA McCOY/SUN HERALDSarah Justin, 3, gets ready to swim while enjoying a day with her family at Gulf Islands Waterpark on Sunday.

AMANDA McCOY SUN HERALDBuy Photo

GULFPORT — Those who ventured to Gulf Islands Waterpark Sunday were welcomed with sunny skies, plenty of available parking spaces and no lines on the waterslides — the perfect opening day if not for the chilly breeze that kept the less adventurous away.

“At least no one’s getting too hot today,” said Betty Wallace, who handles marketing for the park. The only other cold start she recalls was the year the park opened on Good Friday.

“This is the first time it’s been this chilly in May,” she said.

The sun was warm and Marielis Vega of Gulfport said a little chill wasn’t going to keep her family from celebrating a birthday at the park.

Jeffrey Justin, his wife Amanda and their three daughters, Chloe, Heather and Sarah, drove over from Louisiana for opening day. The girls, in pink bathing suits and orange life jackets, said they liked the slides the best. Squeals could be heard coming from the Riptide Racer, Horn Island Blaster and Cat Island Catapult slides and the wave pool.

Justin said he went online and compared waterparks before they bought season passes to Gulf Islands. “They had a lot of good rides here,” he said.

Season passes are $49.99 through June 7, said Wallace, then go up to $54.99. The price is about the price of two daily tickets, which are $29.99, or $21.99 for those under 42 inches. Children under 2 get in free.

Season passes are good every day of the season, including during special events. Next Sunday staff from Michaels Arts & Crafts will be at the park helping kids make a gift for the moms.

Three Chinese government ships have sailed into the waters of disputed Tokyo-controlled islands, according to Japan’s coastguard.

The maritime surveillance ships entered the 12-nautical-mile zone off the Senkaku islands, which China calls the Diaoyu, around 11am (0200 GMT) on Sunday.

Chinese government ships have frequently sailed around the five islands in recent months, sparking diplomatic clashes with Japan.

In late April, eight Chinese government vessels sailed into the disputed waters, the biggest flotilla in a single day since Tokyo nationalised part of the island chain in September.

The move sparked an angry response, with Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe vowing to “expel by force” any Chinese landing on the archipelago, which is believed to harbour vast natural resources below its seabed.

The developments come as China’s first passenger cruise made its way to the South China Sea Paracel Islands to which several East Asian countries have laid claim.

There is something special about islands. I can’t remember a time when I did not love islands.

The first movie I ever saw that didn’t star Hopalong or Roy was “The Swiss Family Robinson.” And the first book I read that was thicker than my thumb was “Robinson Crusoe,” and “Treasure Island” was not far behind.

The first islands I got to explore firsthand were hummocks rising out of the Pearl River swamp on my grandfather’s farm near Philadelphia, Miss. The largest of these encompassed at least 15 acres of bottomland — big enough to accommodate a field of hay and the barn in which to stow it. And after every good rain, that hay field would sprout arrowheads, gifts to us young’uns from artisans long dead.

It was a magical place, a crossroads for game animals, migrating birds, fishermen and hunters, and sometimes a Choctaw would pass this way and kneel in the muddy ground just like we did, marveling at the earth that grew arrowheads long after their makers had abandoned them. Were those points offerings to the animal spirits, or were they discarded as flawed? To me, every one was a marvel.

After touring Fort Massachusetts on Ship Island and Fort Gaines on Dauphin Island at age 3 or so, I started to associate islands with forts. I was still too young or too dense to equate that hayfield of arrowheads with the massive fortifications favored by the European settlers. But it was all there right in front of me to discover — fresh water bubbled from an artesian spring and spilled into the swamp teeming with fish and game, nuts from hickory, pecans and chinquapins. Some years, my grandfather planted a few rows of corn and greens of several kinds for the critters that shared the island with us.

After I got my first pair of bird-worthy binoculars, I quickly realized forts on islands are no longer where they keep the guns, but they are almost always where you can find good birding.

My wife, Lin, and I have traced the outline of our continent, skipping from fort to refuge to fort to garbage dump to swamp and to the next fort. But we still keep returning to those first islands I explored as a boy. And no matter how far we travel away from the Gulf Coast, we return to the shores of Dauphin Island at least for spring and fall migrations. We’ve been coming for decades now.

The most hallowed ground on Dauphin Island is Shell Mound Park. At first, I thought the shell mound was just that — a big pile of oyster shells. But this pile of shells was a place to shelter from cold winters, a place to swap seeds and plants and stories with other tribes, and it was a burial ground. And I can’t help believing some of those folks just came to partake of a little bird watching while trading and gorging on oysters.

And on this island I finally realized my grandfather’s hayfield in the swamp was, indeed a fortress — no, that’s the wrong word — it was a sanctuary. And I imagine Native Americans of several bands visited there during the winters to swap with each other. Maybe they just wanted to get away from the rest of their family. Maybe my grandfather’s island was once a clubhouse with its own secret handshake. One thing is sure; they certainly had lots of arrowheads lying around.

We birders still come to bear witness to the miracle of migration. And we’ve watched the overall number of birds dwindle from a flood to a trickle.

GENEVAThe Castro government’s easing of foreign travel restrictions on Cubans has not led to greater freedoms on the island, a leading dissident said on Wednesday.

Elizardo Sanchez said 19 opposition activists had been allowed to leave since a new exit policy was introduced on January 14. Dozens more would go in the next few weeks, he said.

But the Communist government, in power since 1959, was keeping strict control on dissident voices at home, he said.

“They calculate it will be freedom of expression for people outside

A total of 92 political prisoners were currently held in Cuban jails, which the International Committee of the Red Cross has not been allowed visit since 1989, he said. A further 350 were held in short-term detention on political grounds.

Sanchez is president of the Havana-based independent Cuban Commission of Human Rights and for years has been one of the most prominent opposition figures tolerated by the government.

President Raul Castro has introduced some economic and other reforms since taking over Cuba’s leadership from his brother Fidel in 2008 but they have stressed it will not stray from the revolutionary path.

Sanchez, who said he had spent nearly 12 years in jails and was on his first foreign trip in more than a decade, said he worried he would face reprisals when returned to Cuba in June.

Users of TripAdvisor, list the best ten islands in the world you absolutely must visit.

From Phuket to Langkawi, Koh Samui and more — the best islands to visit this summer!

10. Havelock Islands

Premium scuba diving and snorkelling are the highlights of the gorgeous Havelock Island, the most popular of the Andaman Islands. Glass-bottomed boats provide a similar up-close marine life experience. Jungle treks and camping are popular landlubbing activities, though the more delicately dispositioned can choose to retire to one of several luxury resorts. Refuel with fresh coconut milk and succulent, just-caught seafood, which dominates every meal.

Forested hills, romantic white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters greet visitors to tropical Palau Langkawi, the largest of the 99 islands in Langkawi archipelago. Known mysteriously as “Legendary Island” because of myths associated with its ancient geological formations, it drifts serenely alongside Malaysia in the azure Andaman Sea. Sample local cuisine at the night markets, hike to dramatic waterfalls or dive into an underwater marine park to take a guided glimpse at life beneath the sea.

WASHINGTON – Islands at the center of a territorial row between Japan and China are covered by a military protection accord between Washington and Tokyo, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Monday.

“The United States does not take a position on the ultimate sovereignty of the islands, but we do recognize they are under the administration of Japan and fall under our security treaty obligations,” Hagel said at a news conference with his Japanese counterpart Itsunori Onodera.

Hagel’s comments came amid rising tension over the uninhabited islands known in Japan as the Senkakus and in China as the Diaoyus.

On April 23, Japan’s prime minister vowed to “expel by force” any Chinese landing on the islands after a flotilla sailed into the disputed waters in the East China Sea.

The Chinese flotilla was the biggest to do so in a single day since Japan nationalized part of the island chain — which is surrounded by rich fisheries and believed to harbor vast natural resources below the seabed — in September.

Calling the dispute a key regional security challenge, Hagel said it “must be resolved peacefully and cooperatively between the parties involved.”

Washington “opposes any unilateral or coercive action that seeks to undermine Japan’s administrative control,” he said, in reference to the recent Chinese actions.

“Any actions that could raise tensions or lead to miscalculations affect the stability of the entire region.”

In the talks with Hagel, Onodera said he “explained Japan’s basic position that the islands are clearly an inherent part of the territory of Japan in light of historical facts and based upon international law, and that Japan is determined to protect its land, water and air.”

Turning to North Korea, the Pentagon chief said the isolated country’s “provocative behavior” was “the most obvious threat to stability in the region.”

I’ll let you in on a secret…

Thailand is not the only country in southeast Asia with stunning beaches. Malaysia has dozens of tiny islands on both the east and west coasts that rival the beauty of southern Thailand. Plus, the beaches in Malaysia have the added advantage of being relatively unknown (read: cheaper, less crowded, more unspoilt).

Photo credit: Nicolas Lannuzel on Flickr.

One important fact to keep in mind when planning a trip to any Malaysian beach is the monsoon season — do not visit the east coast of Malaysia between November and March, unless you like rain. Lots of rain. That one caveat aside, here are my top picks for a beach-hopping Malaysian adventure.

For more information about Malaysia tours & things to do in Malaysia, check out our Things to Do in Malaysia Blog and our Suggested Itineraries in Malaysia blog post

Redang. The most expensive of the east coast islands, Redang is truly paradise. Very few Malaysians actually live on the island, so you pretty much have the whole place to yourself. Snorkeling is available off any beach; if you’re lucky, you might even see some sea turtles. Redang is well known as a turtle sanctuary, they usually lay their eggs on Turtle Beach on the north of the island. Berjaya Air makes it very easy to get to Redang from KL’s Subang airport (a 45-minute flight, and you’re on the beach within five minutes of arriving).

Perhentian Islands. A selection of smaller islands just north of Redang, the Perhentians are very popular with budget travelers. The beaches are totally unspoilt, with a wide variety of beach huts right on the shore, for just the right price. A favorite for diving and snorkeling, the Perhentians are a great place to earn your scuba diving certificate.

TOKYO, April 18 (UPI) — The Miyakejima Islands were rattled by about 40 noticeable earthquakes, including at least two Thursday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The strongest of earthquakes, which began rumbling Wednesday, registered a magnitude of 6.2 and was in waters near the island in Tokyo’s Izu island chain, Yomiuri Shimbun reported.

The earthquakes began Wednesday morning and extended into Thursday.

Although it is assumed the quakes are not related to any volcanic activity, the meteorological agency said it would monitor the situation.

The Oi nuclear power plant, Japan’s only online nuclear reactor, is near the island, but its operator, Kansai Electric, said the earthquake didn’t damage the facility.

Miyake village government officials said most damage, including landslides, was on the western half of the island.

Village officials and construction workers began clearing an earthquake-triggered landslide that inundated a road Thursday.

“We didn’t expect this,” a village official said. “We won’t be able to open this road.”
