5 SEO Lessons for Entrepreneurs

Whether you think SEO is an acronym for search engine optimization or screwing everyone over, you dont even need awebsite to learn valuable life lessons from SEO. Its one of the most confusing, jargon-riddled, important, and lucrative IT fields in existenceand its not going anywhere.

Even though the majority of small businesses in the US dont have a website (even though they really should), there will come a time whenyou need to be online or shut your doors.

And when youre online? SEO determines your popularity, customer reach, and ultimately how successfulyour business will be.

However, the evolving best practices of SEO are actually great business lessons beyond optimizing your website. Here are a few things to learn from SEO to become a better entrepreneur:

Black hat tricks are basically ways of falsely (and sometimes illegally) bolstering your website up the rankings. Usually, this is a short-term approachbecause thealgorithms are getting better, which means you will get caught. Depending on the severity of the, crime, Google might penalize your site or even remove you entire from the search engine results.

My friend Murray Newlands always warns entrepreneurs Messing with Google isnt worth it. The best and easiest way to rank these days is to keep 100% of your efforts with your customer in mind. Black Hat isnt what your customer wants, nor Google. Always think with your customers in mind and youll never have to worry about Google.

The lesson: Shortcuts are for amateurs and its not worth it in the long haul.

When a person types a search into Google, their choice of words are likely to query, electric blankets Anchorage and not Buy an electric blanket in Anchorage. This means you need to come up with creative ways to include keyword variants naturally and organically even when they are really awkward.

The lesson: Give the people what they want, even if its not easy and even if it seems stupid in the beginning. Keep in mind that they arepaying the bills.

Google rolls out hundreds of updates each year, and only smidgen of them are officially announced. However, SEO experts are guessing that Panda updates will now happen every quarter. I would say that its happening daily, though we dont see all the major changes as they are small. Depending on the update, your industry, and your site, you might need to make major tweaks or minor ones. Its going to always be evolving.

Up Close @ SMX: Avoiding SEO Disasters

The following is a recap of Mark Munroes presentation in the SMX East 2014 session Conquering Todays Technical SEO Challenges.

Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong.

This is commonly known as Murphys Law, and anyone managing SEO for any substantial amount of time knows how true this can be and how painful.

One day, you pull the organic traffic numbers and theyredown. Way down. Your heart sinks. Then you notice the email from your boss asking about it.

That sounds like a nightmare scenario, but it happens all too frequently in the SEO world.

Luckily for you, there are a set of known issuesto checkfor when you see a large, unexpected drop in organic traffic. The best way to avoid being in the scenario described above is to constantly monitor for these issues and try to catch them before they happen.

When you see a sudden drop in traffic in a short amount of time, the first thing to check is if your site has been de-indexed from the search engines.

Maybe your development team forgot to switch off the noindex/nofollow tags when they pushed the new website to production. Maybe there was a change in site structure (how could they not tell you?!) and the robots.txt file was not updated.

The first thing to check is the HTML source of some of your most popular pages, and at least one page from each unique template on your site. Are there any noindex/nofollow tags?

5 Googley SEO Terms Do They Mean What You Think They Mean?

SEO  Comments Off on 5 Googley SEO Terms Do They Mean What You Think They Mean?

Many terms are used within the search industry. These words all have very specific meanings when it comes to search engine optimization (SEO) and how you implement your strategy. However, many of these terms are often used incorrectly.

Sometimes this misuse causes no issues. After all, a rose by any other name and all.

However, there are other times where not properly understanding these terms can lead to making mistakes that could cost you in the long run, in terms of traffic, position, and conversions.

So let’s look at some of the most commonly misunderstood terms in Google search.

Most people think the robots.txt file is used to block content from the search engines.

This isn’t how robots.txt works.

A robots.txt is used to stop a page or part of a site from being crawled and indexed, but not the URL(s) itself. So site owners wind up with this listing in Google’s search results:

Erroneously, webmasters and site owners will add pages and folders to their robots.txt file, thinking this means that page won’t get indexed. Then they see the URL in Google SERPs and wonder how it got there.

Robots.txt won’t prevent the URL from being indexed, just the page content. If Google knows about the page from a link or other method, it will index the URL along with the infamous “page cannot be displayed” description.

PHOENIX, AZ–(Marketwire – Apr 1, 2013) – Although many businesses have yet to discover the value of online marketing, Dynamix7.com notes that optimizing online presence will determine the vitality of any company in a few short years. As such, this company notes that many small businesses must learn the principles of search engine optimization — also known as SEO.

According to Dynamix7.com, SEO strategies continue to evolve, which is why it is essential for business owners to “jump on the bandwagon” and revisit online content. In a recent press statement, Dynamix7.com explains, “Search engine optimization requires businesses to look at content and create web-based material so that certain keywords draw the attention of leading search engine. This means, that with a little ingenuity and dedication, business owners can optimize their online presence when consumers are searching for key terms through popular search engines.”

While many companies may already have online content, a recent article from Entrepreneur suggests that many businesses may want to conduct an “SEO audit.” The article explains, “If a business website isn’t properly optimized for search, it’s most likely missing out on a significant amount of traffic from the search engines, including from potential customers.” Sharing a similar sentiment, Dynamix7.com notes that the fixes may be simple, but those in charge of online marketing efforts must be current on standard SEO practices to know what to look for when auditing a business’ online content.

For example, Entrepreneur suggests checking for broken links, a home page’s speed and howother competitors fare in relevant searches. While it may be easy to review existing content and alter it for SEO purposes, Dynamix7.com believes that it may also require businesses to become more invested in the online space.

“It is essential for business owners to not only understand the importance of online marketing efforts, such as search engine optimization, but to also know how to create fresh and compelling content that will make an impact on SEO performance. Our digital training service can help business owners learn the principles of online marketing at their own pace, allowing them to revisit e-commerce with a fresh perspective,” Dynamix7.com concludes in its press statement.

SEO.com has Advice for Business Owners who are Struggling to Recover from Latest Google Changes

SEO  Comments Off on SEO.com has Advice for Business Owners who are Struggling to Recover from Latest Google Changes
Jun 112012

Salt Lake City, UT (PRWEB) June 10, 2012

Following recent attempts by Google to improve online search results for consumers, SEO.com warned businesspeople this week that it is now more important than ever to understand how to strengthen Internet marketing efforts without offending the search engines.

Google penalized those who used aggressive search engine optimization tactics to improve where their websites ranked in the search results, said Greg Shuey, vice president of client services for SEO.com, an SEO services company.

Providing high-quality content is key to ranking well in the search engines, Shuey said. When a website is built for search engines instead of its visitors, it could be penalized in the search results.

The latest tweaks to Googles search algorithm aimed to target webspam, he said.

However, with several high-quality websites dinged by the recent changes, which forced relevant companies off the first page of the search results, Shuey said businesses must understand how to avoid penalties from the search engines when marketing to customers online.

SEO.com is helping its clients evaluate their websites and make changes to minimize impacts in the search results.

We do that by analyzing backlinks and looking for over optimization in the way links had been built to target specific keyword phrases, explained Claye Stokes, a search engine optimization director at SEO.com.

With its so-called Penguin algorithm update, Google targeted websites that had content created solely to manipulate search results, Stokes said, adding that strong content should stress the benefit and value of what the website has to offer.

Content written for search engines often contains lots of keyword phrases and links within the website, he said.

Inbound Marketing & SEO – Seize Opportunity or Resist Change

Much has been written lately about SEO and its convergence with social media, content marketing, and other inbound marketing techniques. While many people in the SEO field embrace the convergence of social, content, and inbound marketing strategies others remain resistant to change and convergence.

Change is something that search, digital, and in-house marketing departments need to adapt to quickly. Clients seek solutions on how to integrate SEO, social media, and content marketing. Structuring the way we present our products and services, our talent, and adapting to a more holistic way of thinking is how we help them do this.

In a recent article from the search congress in Barcelona Lee Odden from Top Rank quoted Its not SEO anymore, Its Marketing. Deal with it.

The question today is. Can people actually deal with it?

While we sit and gasp at the marvels of Facebook and Google engineering that have got us to where we are today, we often overlook for the most marvelous and complex piece over engineering ever the human brain.

With a little help from the experts we have dug a little deeper into this subject to come up with ideas, questions, and tips that may help us find easy answers to some overhyped problems on the convergence of media.

As marketers we spend lots of time talking about user behavior, buying personas, and the psychology of sharing related to our products and services, such as the psychology of sharing and the psychology of link building, social influence, audience segmentation and remarketing.

However, we spend very little looking into and analyzing our own approaches and personas.

Two different sides, or hemispheres, of the brain are responsible for different ways of thinking and as soon as we look into the difference between the left and right brain hemispheres it clearly becomes apparent why some people are more technically driven than others and why so much conflict and debate surrounds topics such as inbound media, SEO, and social media.

To put is simply and go back to basics – left-brain marketers who tend to be analytical collide with right-brained marketers who think holistically and are more open to conceptual thinking.Ring any bells?
