SAN DIEGO – The beach water quality in San Diego County during the summer season was among the best in the state, although the Tijuana River mouth made the list of the state’s most polluted beaches due to a sewage spill, according to Heal the Bay’s 23rd annual Beach Report Card released Thursday.

The Santa Monica-based environmental group assigned letter grades based on levels bacterial pollutants in the water to 71 beaches along the county’s coast, with 68 of those given an A for the period from last April to October — up 3 percent from last year’s report.

San Diego County’s 96 percent A rating compares with 85 percent of the 441 beaches rated statewide that received the same high mark.

The water quality at the county’s beaches during the dry winter months from November to March also showed gains, with 98 percent receiving A or B grades, according to Heal the Bay.

“Summer and winter swimming at San Diego beaches (have) probably never been better in recent history than now,” Heal the Bay Urban Programs Manager James Alamillo said. “(With) the combination of low rainfall, projects implemented to control dry-weather discharges and greater public education, the county and its municipalities seemingly have runoff issues under control.”

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for sewage,” Alamillo said. “Once again, San Diego led all California coastal counties in the volume of sewage spilled.”

No D or F grades were given to San Diego County’s beaches, but the Tijuana Slough at the Tijuana River Mouth received a C grade, according to Heal the Bay.

The beach at the mouth of the Tijuana River took the 10th spot on Heal the Bay’s annual “Beach Bummers List” of the 10 most polluted beaches in the state. Avalon Harbor Beach on Catalina Island topped the list, according to the report.

Flows in the Tijuana River impacted beach water quality at Border Field State Park beach, the Tijuana River Wildlife Refuge and Imperial Beach. Dry weather flow was caused by treated effluent being discharged into the river upstream by a sewage treatment plant in Tijuana, Heal the Bay reported.

Border beaches also were impacted by untreated sewage that spilled into the Tijuana River or were discharged into the ocean just south of the U.S.-Mexico border. The spill led to 10 beach closures from the Silver Strand to the border, and the four southernmost beaches were closed for 139 days during the study’s reporting period, according to Heal the Bay.

SAN DIEGO Several beaches along the Tijuana-San Diego border are closed due to a sewage spill, however the extent of the spill remains unknown.

WiLDCOAST, a conservation non-profit in Imperial Beach, reported Tuesday that a sewage treatment plant in Tijuana had a collapsed collector and shattered line that resulted in pollutants dumping into the ocean at two liters a second, or 45,600 gallons in 24 hours.

But the spill at Playas de Tijuana has been reported elsewhere to be as much as 100,000 gallons, leading to the closure at San Diego’s southernmost Imperial Beach.

Heres an eerie video of beach goers swimming and fishing despite the spill:

Above: Sewage and polluted runoff has been flowing out of Mexico and to the South Bay coastline for months due to the winter’s rains.

U-T San Diego reported on two potential sources spilling into the ocean:

[In Baja] The CESPT, Tijuana’s public service agency, reported Tuesday evening in a news release that crews would be working for several hours to replace a 26-foot stretch of a 42-inch pipe, which had become blocked.

The U.S. International Boundary and Water Commission on Tuesday reported a second source of potential contamination: polluted flow from the Tijuana River, which runs through Tijuana but empties into the Pacific Ocean in Imperial Beach.

Along the shared coast, occurrences of sewage spills are not uncommon. In January 2011, an estimated 31 million gallons of sewage spilled in Playas de Tijuana and seeped into Imperial Beach.

Landing in San Diego from the Islands San Diego Airport
I would have to say San Diego International ranks among the worlds most dangerous. Aircraft have to negotiate mountains, foothills, and then a PARKING GARAGE (still don't know how in the world they allowed that garage to be built where it is.) They then have to clear a fence. The runway is only about 9700 feet in length, and has a huge displaced threashold, thereby using up a chuck of the runway right off the bat. I can't believe 747's used to land here by both United and British Airways (BA now uses 777's for their San Diego flights, and UAL has long since stopped thier 747 service to SAN.)

Strong rip currents and elevated surf slammed into beaches across San Diego County Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the hazardous rip currents will stick around through Monday morning thanks to a northwest swell generated over the western Pacific.

Surfing is possible during this time, but the NWS and local lifeguards urge surfers to take extra caution in the water.

The strong rip currents and elevated surf increase the danger to swimmers as well, so its important to pay attention to flags and signs posted on beaches by local lifeguards.

The NWS says waves are expected to reach four to six feet in San Diego County, with some wave sets reaching up to eight feet just south of Encinitas.

The persistent rip currents and high surf should decrease by Monday and Tuesday. The NWS says similar surf conditions may kick up again Friday. The elevated seas could cause some minor beach erosion, tidal overflow and minor coastal flooding.

Rip currents occur most often at low spots or breaks in the sandbar, often near jetties and piers. If you become caught in a rip current, experts recommend swimming parallel to shore and not directly against the current, as this can quickly exhaust even the most experienced of swimmers.

On Sunday morning, San Diego Lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum said no major incidents related to the local strong rip currents had yet been reported.

Winter Storm 2012 San Diego Commercial (HD)!
Winter Storm 2012 coming to San Diego Saturday, December 29th! WinterStorm2012.com Concept: Not surprisingly, this commercial was likely to confuse many of our viewers. One may wonder how the track selected, “All gold everything” by upcoming rapper Trinidad James, Eritrean traditional Eritrean clothing, taxicabs, skateboards, beaches and extravagant jewelry have to do with each other. As mentioned time and again, each commercial is supposed to contain Eritrean, local, thematic and cultural elements. The purpose of this commercial was to bring attention to recent phenomena in our communities including the obvious blending of Eritrean and American cultures but most importantly, our negative and positive experience as a community with capitalism. Many of us have noticed that the use of gold for example, symbolic of material wealth, has recently become almost a competitive sport within many circles. This itself raises many questions as it reflects on our changing values and how many of us negotiate our values as Eritreans in America. On the other hand however, many Eritrean-American residents and visitors of San Diego alike have likely seen the Eritrean domination over the taxicab industry in San Diego. The “Eritrean Cab” in the commercial therefore is symbolic of the local Eritrean response of entrepreneurship and resourcefulness to unfair capitalist institutions as immigrants and people of color. This is the final official commercial for Winter Storm 2012 and we hope that …From:YPFDJCaliforniaViews:2 0ratingsTime:01:24More inNonprofits Activism

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A $28.5 million project to replenish sand on eight San Diego County beaches got underway Saturday in Imperial Beach, according to the San Diego Association of Governments.

Between September and December, more than 1.4 million cubic yards of sand will be dredged to restore eroded beaches in Imperial Beach, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad and Oceanside, SANDAG officials said.

“People from around the world come to San Diego County to enjoy our world-class surf and beaches, so it’s important we restore eroded beaches by periodically replenishing them with additional sand,” said Jerome Stocks, SANDAG chair and Encinitas mayor. “Sand replenishment also benefits shorebirds by providing them with an additional sandy beach habitat; and it helps support our local economy, as well as protect public and private infrastructure from high tides and storm damage.”

County beaches have steadily eroded over the past decades and sand no longer flows downstream due to development, water supply and flood control projects, and modifications to the coastline, according to SANDAG.

The beaches will be replenished in 500-foot segments, which will not be publicly accessible as sand-laden water is pumped in. The closures will shift along the fill site until each beach is completed.

The sand will be dredged from designated offshore areas within a mile of the shoreline that have sand similar to that on the beaches or is slightly coarser, SANDAG said.

The cities of Carlsbad, Encinitas, Imperial Beach, Oceanside and Solana Beach are funding the project, along with the California Department of Boating and Waterways.
