MPAA's Dodd to Chair Free Speech Week Advisory Council

I am still of the belief that two of the most important conversations we can have with regards to the future of humanity and of sentient life in general are (a) how the transition to transhumanism could / should take place, and (b) where we would like this transition to inevitably leave us. This short work will have to do with the latter and its emphasis will be a transhuman future ideal state that exemplifies the notion of freedom.

Ill begin with identifying what freedom means, why it might be desirable (and why it might not be), and how it might be ideally attained in a technologically advanced future.

Freedom can be defined (www.meriam-webster.com) as the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action.

As human beings, a sense of autonomy and self-possession is essential to our well-being. It is a constituent of fulfillment based on the nature that we have been granted. We should not suppose, however, that it is inherently good in and of itself, though as humans this inkling of freedom = good is easy to make, as most all of us want it, and want more of it.

It might be possible, for example, for a species to have evolved with a desire to be directed externally, to be constrained in certain ways and so gain a sense of safety and order. These inklings also exist within us as humans, and it might be supposed that if these were more prominent than our drive for freedom, we might not have any noticeably less fulfilling lives (again, assuming that this drive for safety and order was more fulfilling and prominent than that for freedom and autonomy).

However, freedom and autonomy likely served a very important role in our development as a species, and continue to play a role in our transition beyond biological intelligence. We seek expansion, betterment, exploration, and for this reason we see the societies, cultures, and technological advancements of the day. We seek to gain more of what we want, and to have our own wants and pursue them.

Before delving into the epitome of freedom as a transhuman idea to be striven for, I aught address that freedom may not necessarily be good in and of itself (or only in certain contexts). Our human brains associate autonomy and freedom with fulfillment and well-being, but this is no innate requirement of sentient beings. We associate dignity with freedom, but this association may matter little outside of our notions and perspectives as humans.

However, freedom does seem to have taken us to where we are today, and we can assume that it could serve a utility in our explorations of consciousness / sentient potential (and so the future of sentient beings). Hence, it may prove useful as a transhuman ideal as it is not stagnant, and may reveal more and greater levels of potential modes of existence. If our transhuman future aims not only for proliferation of the good life for conscious beings (whatever that ends up meaning [let us hope it implied well-being]), but also for continued progress in exploring the possibilities of conscious experience, then the epitome of freedom may be a model of a transhuman future that we find desirable.

If all (originally) human consciousness were to be put in a state of relatively unthinking super-bliss, our subjective quality of life might skyrocket beyond all imagination but we as previously human consciousness would not be contributing to the furthering of our own potential, or the discovery of further possibilities of capability of well-being. In a situation of unbridled freedom, human consciousness might not only control and enjoy experience, but might vigilantly find new possibilities which all sentient beings could learn from and gain from. If there was an established method for these new discoveries to be shared or proliferated (either between conscious entities or through the medium of some super-intelligence), then each free entity even if in its own virtual world might gain and discover new experiences / capacities / ways of being that all other intelligent life could learn from or draw from.

Given the potential of future technologies, certainty is the last thing we have with regards to what the world might look like, but we might paint a picture as many fiction writers and futurists have aptly done, in order to explore how the expression of different ideals might look and feel in the future.

Ranking in search engines, particularly Google, is not getting any easier, but how often are you considering the search engines around the globe? Many in the industry see international SEO as only gaining in importance.

Do you think its more important for marketers to optimize for different search engines around the world than it used to be? Share your thoughts in the comments.

A recent report from BrightEdge indicates that the majority of search marketers think that it is becoming more important for sites to rank in global search engines. According to the firms survey, six out of ten believe it will become either more or much more important this year, compared to last year. 36% said more, while 27% said much more.

SEO marketers at global companies aspire to reach customers worldwide, and drive leads, revenue and traf!c through global SEO initiatives, says BrightEdge in the report. Looking beyond a single country also helps them demonstrate a greater ROI on marketing investments. Not only does this boost marketing ROI but also maintains global brand consistency while accommodating local nuances. A global concerted approach to SEO marketing addresses these needs.

Respondents were specifically asked about Chinese search giant Baidu, with 31% saying it would be much more important to rank in Baidu in 2013, and 10% saying much more important.

With roughly 540 million internet users, 900 million mobile users and 388 million mobile internet users, China is the worlds largest internet market, says BrightEdge. Baidu, Chinas dominant search engine, is one of the most valuable gateways to this large internet user base.

You can download the report in its entirety here. It deals with numerous topics, far beyond the topic of global SEO.

Another recent report (via MarketingCharts) from Covario found that Baidu generated three times more global paid search clicks than Yahoo/Bing in Q1.

I no longer believe it makes sense for any company to roll out an international SEO programme to multiple countries without also having a PPC campaign in place, writes WebCertain CEO Andy Atkins-Krger in a post for Search Engine Land about multinational SEO. In some cases, we would recommend leading with PPC and landing pages first, rather than full blown (and relatively expensive) international SEO.

He adds, There are a number of reasons why we recommend this, but one is that user satisfaction on your site can be measured much more quickly with PPC than with SEO. Behavior really matters so if you can study it first and quickly with PPC, your SEO efforts later will work out to be much more successful. I do worry that the association of search engine warnings with SEO being bad are beginning to stick with people who are newer to the industry, and therefore, SEO is having a health warning attached.

Continued here:
Is International SEO More Important Now?

Ive been thinking a lot recently about the term SEO and what it really means today. After a record run of attending conferences ranging from San Jose, Toronto, London and Leeds (soon to be joined by Seattle and Riga),Ivebecome very conscious of a cloud of what can only be described as SEO Depression unfolding over conference panelists (though much less so for the delegates themselves).

The recurring narrative seems to be that Matt Cutts, like some kind of demon, is always about to unleash a torrent of difficulties for SEO folks. One area which has come under heavy scrutiny in light of the recent Panda/Penguin updates is link building and adding links to your site.Unlike some colleagues, I dont believe that link building is over, but I do think that those inbound links have to have a genuine value for users, otherwise theyre really not going to help much.

To be honest, thats been one of the search engines objectives for quite some time to use links as an indicator of quality. So, ifyouvebeen gaming the system to get links, youre much more likely to fall under the microscope each time a new change hits.

Im not going to write one of those posts about SEO being dead, because I certainly dont believe that to be the case. But, I do think its worth examining some of the common anxieties within the industry, especially as applied to Multinational SEO.

One of the things I hear often is the concern that paid search is eating into organic search, making SEO either less relevant or a less worthwhile time/financial investment. This strikes me as the wrong way to look at it.

If paid search is supplanting organic search permanently or temporarily (or, indeed, at all), that doesnt change the fact that strong SEO is an integral part of any online marketing plan. If your competitors invest in SEO while you dont, theyre going to see gains that youre missing out on. SEO and PPC often work hand-in-hand, and you can make use of both while still erring on the side of caution.

For example, I no longer believe it makes sense for any company to roll out an international SEO programme to multiple countries without also having a PPC campaign in place. In some cases, we would recommend leading with PPC and landing pages first, rather than full blown (and relatively expensive) international SEO.

There are a number of reasons why we recommend this, but one is that user satisfaction on your site can be measured much more quickly with PPC than with SEO. Behavior really matters so if you can study it first and quickly with PPC, your SEO efforts later will work out to be much more successful. I do worry that the association of search engine warnings with SEO being bad are beginning to stick with people who are newer to the industry, and therefore, SEO is having a health warning attached.

There is no doubt that not looking after your SEO health could potentially have even bigger commercial consequences for your organization but if you walk away, youll never actually know what you lost until a competitor shows you the way (which they surely will).

A conversation with a translation agency this last week also made me chuckle. Because translation agencies have seen an opportunity to sell more services from their existing resource networks, theyvecreated terms to cover the services theyre adding to their websites.

GEORGE TOWN, Grand Cayman–(BUSINESS WIRE)–

The Cayman Islands captive insurance industry has launched a new brand to promote its integrity and transparency in international markets with the tagline Cayman Islands. Clearly Better Business.

Using images of Caymans business environment that denote transparency and openness, the new brand and tagline illustrates the high quality professionalism that has attributed to Cayman being a well-established international financial centre.

Rob Leadbetter, Chairman of the Insurance Managers Association of Cayman (IMAC), the sponsors of the new brand, clarified the reasoning behind the branding exercise: We are well aware that we are operating in an increasingly competitive and mobile market and although Cayman is one of the worlds largest insurance domiciles, we do not have the luxury of complacency. Our audience is sophisticated and professional and we need to be communicating with them in a sophisticated and professional manner.

The new brand will be rolled out at RIMS 2013, one of the leading risk management conferences, which is held this year in Los Angeles, California 21 24 April. IMAC representatives will be available at booth #221 to discuss the benefits of establishing a captive in the Cayman Islands, including its appropriate, business friendly regulation; the well-established infrastructure including world-class service providers; and its transparent, open approach to business.

Fountainhead Business Development, a Cayman-based marketing agency, was selected to provide the creative strategy behind the brand because of their in-depth knowledge of Caymans financial services industry and the international markets that Cayman services. Denise Gower, managing director, clarified the thinking behind the concept: It is no secret that Cayman is not often well-represented in the mainstream media despite the jurisdictions high standards of compliance with international regulatory initiatives and its sound legal and regulatory regime. We wanted this new brand to hit these misperceptions head-on. I think we got there with this.

Insurance Managers Association of Cayman (IMAC) is a non-profit organisation run by the insurance managers of the Cayman Islands. In operation since 1981, IMACs aim is to act as both regulatory liaison with the Cayman Islands Government and to promote the Cayman Islands as the domicile of choice for captive insurance companies.

For more information on IMAC visit www.caymancaptive.ky.

A group representing caravan and motor home owners is heading to court to challenge Westland District Council’s freedom camping bylaw.

Motor Caravan Association general manager Bruce Lochore says lawyers are filing papers in the High Court on Monday in a bid to quash the bylaw, which bans freedom camping within 1km of 18 West Coast towns and settlements.

It came into effect in November.

Mr Lochore told NZ Newswire the council has put a very restrictive policy in place without identifying specific problems with freedom campers.

He says the council has failed to meet its obligations under the Freedom Camping Act in establishing the bylaw.

“There are a number of councils around the country that are in the middle of reviewing their freedom camping bylaws and looking at putting policies in place. Some of them are going outside their bounds and some of them are doing a very good job,” Mr Lochore says.

“We want the courts to set some case law and just put in concrete the obligations that council have to meet.”
