An aspiring musician pleaded not guilty this morning in Henrico County Circuit Court to malicious wounding and other charges in a case allegedly motivated by the belief that successful musicians need to sacrifice someone to reach stardom.

Wafeeq Sabir El-Amin, 27, faces a scheduled two-day jury trial for the Dec. 26 shooting of a music partner after the two spent the evening smoking marijuana and brushing up on hip-hop music lore dealing with the Illuminati, a mystical group that supposedly controls elements of the entertainment industry and requires a killing to be successful.

El-Amin was at a proposed studio with the victim in the 1000 block of Athens Avenue, near the intersection of Brook and Parham Roads, when he allegedly shot the man, who deflected a bullet with his hand, diverting it from his head.

The victim allegedly then got control of the weapon and shot El-Amin in the stomach. The victim has not been charged.

Opening arguments will begin after a jury is selected.

El-Amin is charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in a felony, and two drug counts.
