Jefferson County commissioners passed a resolution supporting the Second Amendment and urging Congress and the Colorado legislature not to consider or enact any laws that would infringe on Americans’ right to bear arms.

Commissioner Don Rosier, a Republican, said he created the resolution to protect Second Amendment rights which he said are “on the precipice of being eroded.” The three-member board approved the resolution by a vote of 2 to 1 on Tuesday.

The resolution urges lawmakers to reject international treaties and any legislation that would infringe on Second Amendment rights, including restrictions on firearm accessories and the sale and transfer of legally owned guns.

County resolutions are typically symbolic gestures designed to show support for an issue.

Commissioner Casey Tighe, a Democrat who beat John Odom, Republican, in November’s election, voted against the measure and introduced an “alternative” resolution he said allowed for future discussions about gun laws.
