FLORENCE, Ky. – Twenty four baseball players with big league dreams are stepping out on the field for the first time Thursday night at the home of the Florence Freedom.

The Florence Freedom are preparing for opening night Thursday and many players are hoping the independent league team will help them hit it big. The players only make $600 to $1,600 a month, but many play for the exposure.

“All these guys are very fresh, very hungry to get to the affiliate level to make their major league debut,” said General Manager Josh Anderson.

Anderson says at any given game, there could be a few major league scouts looking for the next big player.

He says there’s more than just baseball action kicking off at the ball park Thursday.

“There’s so much else going on besides the game itself. Kind of a circus breaks out in a baseball game, so to speak,” said Anderson.

On Thursdays, the team is offering dollar beers, dollar hot dogs, and dollar sodas.

On Fridays, expect a free fireworks show.

And after every Saturday game this summer, a live local band will entertain you. The concert is free with regular admission to the game.

Anderson says the team also has a new program for families. On Saturdays, parents can enjoy some alone time listening to a live band while the Florence Freedom entertains your kids on the baseball field for free.

TORONTO , May 14, 2012 /CNW/ – Liberty Mines Inc. (“Liberty” or the “Company”) today announced results from a deep drill program on its Hart Nickel Deposit that suggests increased mineralization at depth. The drilling program is consistent with the Company’s strategy to add to its current resource base, and support production activities at its 2,000 ton per day Redstone Mill.

“These drill results demonstrate the potential for adding significant tonnage to the Hart resource and support our belief that there are deeper deposits within the Shaw Dome region,” commented Chris Stewart , President & CEO of Liberty Mines. “We are very encouraged by the mineralization in the drill holes along with the results of the down the hole geophysics we carried out on the three deep drill holes. The current indicated resource of 1.55 million tonnes at the Hart deposit ends at a depth of about 550m below surface. These new deep drill hole intersections suggest we could add significant tonnes to the overall Hart resources at depth.”

An intercept of 0.96% Ni over a drilled width of 0.9 meters from 795.6 to 796.5 meters in drill hole H-12-31A occurred at a vertical depth of 780 meters below surface. In addition, an intercept of 0.6% Ni over a drilled width of 3.5 meters occurred from 786.8 to 790.3 meters. The Hart Deposit has an indicated resource of 1,546,000 tonnes grading 1.4% Nickel from surface to approximately 550 meters below surface. In late 2011, Liberty Mines drilled a deep hole targeting the vertical projection of a VTEM airborne conductor. Drill hole H-11-23 intersected 1.24% Ni over a drilled width of 3.6 meters approximately 550 meters vertically below surface ( Dec 14, 2011 press release). The recent intercept in drill hole H-12-31A occurs approximately 270 meters down dip of drill hole H-11-23.

Recently, a borehole geophysical survey was performed on both of these drill holes by Crone Geophysics and Exploration Ltd. The responses from the surveys suggest a significant conductor lies west of drill hole H-11-23 at an approximate depth of 580 meters and a conductive response also lies immediately east and below drill hole H-12-31A at an approximate vertical depth of 800 meters. Liberty Mines plans to drill test these conductive responses to build upon the recent deep drill hole intercepts.

On the Hart East project, a recent deep drill hole, H-11-30 intersected 1.02% Ni over a drilled width of 1.7 meters at approximately 650 meters vertically below surface ( March 26, 2012 press release). A borehole survey performed on this drill hole indicates a substantial off hole response to the east and above the deep intercept which could represent significant accumulations of nickel sulphides. Liberty is also planning to drill test this significant conductor to continue building upon a resource for the Hart East.

To see an image of the Hart & Hart East projects, click the following link: http://files.newswire.ca/1063/Hart_and_Hart_East.pdf

Currently, drilling is focused on a combined airborne VTEM and geochemical soil anomaly equidistant between the Hart and McWatters deposits. Results from the deep drilling on the Hart and Hart East programs are shown in the table below. These drill holes have been bore hole surveyed. The core lengths presented in the table are the intersected lengths, and the composite lengths are core weighted. True widths are unknown. Drill holes H-11-23 and H-11-30 previously reported.

Liberty’s drill projects are being supervised by the Company’s Vice President of Exploration, Peter Caldbick BSc, P.Geo., a qualified person as defined by National Instrument 43-101. The technical contents of the press release have been reviewed and approved by Peter Caldbick. A rigorous quality assurance program is employed which includes the insertion of standards and blanks for each batch of samples. Samples of the NQ size drill core are sawed in half, with one-half sent to a commercial laboratory, AGAT Laboratories Mississauga, Ontario, and the other half retained for future reference. Core samples are routinely analyzed for nickel and copper using sodium peroxide fusion and ICP finish. Any analyses greater than 5,000 ppm are re-analyzed using total acid digestion

An increasing number of England’s beaches have won Blue Flag awards this year, bringing the country into the top 10 worldwide.

For 2012, 79 English beaches have received the awards, nine more than in 2011. The area with the most Blue Flags this year is Thanet in Kent, with nine, followed by Torbay, in Devon, and Cornwall, both with five.

New awards for 2012 included Herne Bay in Kent, Seaton Carew Centre in Tyne and Wear, and Bridlington North and Bridlington South in East Yorkshire.

However, around 30 per cent of the beaches might not reach tougher water quality standards being introduced next year, according to Keep Britain Tidy.

ALACHUA, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–

AxoGen, Inc. (AXGN.OB), a leading regenerative medicine company focused on the commercialization of proprietary products and technologies for peripheral nerve reconstruction and regeneration, today announced revenues for the first quarter ended March 31, 2012 of $1.65 million, a 47% increase over 2011 first quarter revenues of $1.12 million.

This quarters record performance has been the direct result of our increase in sales and marketing activity, commented Karen Zaderej, Chief Executive Officer of AxoGen, Inc. During the first quarter we continued to expand our sales force, while continuing to get hospital approval for AxoGen products and training and developing the sales team. Our growing base of sales representatives, combined with increasing surgeon awareness of our technologies and clinical data, creates a strong environment for our continued growth.

Revenues Revenues for the period increased to a record $1.65 million, or 47%, compared to $1.12 million in 2011. The improved results were primarily due to an increase in new accounts as well as stronger sales penetration into key accounts.

Revenues increased 21% over fourth quarter revenues of $1.36 million.

Gross Profit Gross profit reached $1.21 million, a 55% increase, for first quarter 2012 up from $0.78 million reported for the same period 2011. The higher gross profit reflects lower manufacturing and labor cost and the absence of one-time manufacturing startup expenses reported during the first quarter of 2011. The gross profit margin increased to 73% compared to 70% for the same quarter last year.

Sales and Marketing Expenses As a result of the Company’s investment in additional sales and marketing resources, sales and marketing expenses during the first quarter of 2011 increased to $1.63 million, compared to $0.86 million reported during the same period last year. As of the end of the period, the Company reported 16 direct and 21 independent sales representatives and distributors.

Research and Development Expenses Research and development expenses increased to $0.30 million during the first quarter of 2012. Substantially all of the research and development expenses relate to expenditures for clinical activity.

General and Administrative Expenses General and administrative expenses increased to $1.23 million for the quarter, compared to $0.72 million reported last year. This increase was largely driven by payroll and benefit increases and expenses associated with being a public company.

Operating Loss The Company reported a net loss of $2.11 million, or $0.19 per common share, compared to a net loss of $2.3 million, or $2.21 per common share, reported during the same period in 2011.

Campaigners say Public Order Act is unclear and has resulted in string of controversial arrests Groups join forces to have insulting words or behaviour phrase removed from legislation Former shadow home secretary David Davis: ‘Nobody likes to be insulted, but nor does anyone have a right not to be insulted’

Reform: Campaign groups have urged Home Secretary Theresa May to modify the controversial Public Order Act

Theresa May is being urged to reform a controversial law which bans insulting words or behaviour amid mounting evidence that it is strangling free speech.

Campaigners say the Public Order Act is being abused by over-zealous police and prosecutors to arrest Christian street preachers, critics of Scientology, gay rights campaigners and even students making jokes.

Currently, Section 5 of the 1986 Act outlaws insulting words or behaviour, but what constitutes insulting is unclear and has resulted in a string of controversial arrests.

Human rights campaigners, MPs, faith groups and secular organisations have joined forces to have the insulting words or behaviour phrase removed from the legislation, arguing that it restricts freedom of speech and penalises campaigners, protesters and even preachers.

Former shadow home secretary David Davis, a leading campaigner for civil liberties, said reform was vital to protecting freedom of expression in Britain today.

There is a growing list of examples where the law against using insulting language has led to heavy-handed action by police and prosecutors. It is not only distressing for the individuals concerned, it constitutes a threat to Britains tradition of free speech, he said.

Just as everyone always assumed, Ron Paul never ended up being a major factor in the GOP primary race. Although his dogged and loyal followers are still busy securing delegates for this summer’s convention, Paul semi-suspends his campaign having won a grand total of zero states in terms of actual primary-day voting. In fact, he was one of the only Republican candidates to not even experience one of the race’s trademark fleeting bursts of momentum.

But Paul did improve greatly on his 2008 campaign, basically doubling his poll-measured popularity from one race to the other. It’s possible that the most enduring legacy of Paul’s 2012 campaign will be its role in nudging Paul’s brand of hard-core libertarianism further into the Republican mainstream, and consequently, helping to create a friendlier environment for an expected presidential run by his son Rand Paul in 2016.

As one last farewell, let us now relive some of the most memorable moments of Paul’s campaign, many of which involve Paul on a debate stage wearing an ill-fitting suit.

See original here:
Ron Paul: The Way He Was

Republican Presidential hopeful Ron Paul greets supporters during a town hall meeting at the University of Maryland.

Ron Paul is scaling back his Republican presidential campaign but not his bid to inject more libertarianism into the Republican party, encouraging his supporters to take over the GOP in the long term.

Paul’s announcement that he won’t spend the “tens of millions” of dollars needed to compete in the upcoming Republican presidential primaries has disappointed some of his followers. Many of them can’t accept the notion that front-runner Mitt Romney will actually be the Republican nominee even though Romney is on the verge of gaining a majority of national delegates. But Paul strategists point out that he didn’t actually end his campaign or even suspend it. He is urging his followers to continue pushing at the state and local levels to amass enough delegates to make a difference at the Republican National Convention this August. That was his main goal before the announcement, and it remains his main goal now.

[See Photos of Ron Paul]

He still wants to build the libertarian movement by moving the Republican party in his direction. “Ron Paul has not called off the liberty movement and the transformation of the Republican party,” senior Paul adviser Doug Wead told me Tuesday morning. Nor does he want the “educational” aspect of his candidacy to end, especially his desire to inform Americans about what he considers the excessive power of the Federal Reserve and the government’s botching of monetary policy.

But Paul advisers say that in recent weeks he became concerned about the level of confrontation shown by and toward some of his followers. He felt that the stridency of some of his die-hard supporters was alienating too many conservatives in the GOP and others outside of the party. He remains concerned that his followers might show up en masse in Tampa and stage angry protests outside the convention hall that could be an embarrassment.

Another reason for his scale-back is that Paul’s campaign lacks the money to compete effectively in the upcoming primary states. And Paul, at 76, is said to be weary after many months of cross-country campaigning.

Paul, a U.S. representative from Texas, has inspired some the most intense loyalty of any presidential candidate this year with his support for severe cuts in federal power and spending, and his call for the United States to pull back from its many military commitments overseas, including the war in Afghanistan. He doesn’t want to disappoint or jeopardize these supporters by giving up completely.

But, at the same time, he doesn’t want to jeopardize the nominee’s chances of defeating President Obama by encouraging a raucus and unruly insurgency in Tampa. That would set back Paul’s objective of advancing the libertarian philosophy in the GOP, of moving his supporters into powerful positions within the party, and promoting his son Rand, a GOP senator from Kentucky, as a future libertarian leader.

“Culture what you believe, what you value, how you live matters,” Romney told graduates gathered in the football stadium on Liberty University’s campus in Virginia on Saturday.

Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith has shaped his life, but he barely mentioned it as he spoke to graduates at an evangelical Christian university Saturday.

And he barely touched on hot-button social issues like abortion and gay marriage, instead offering a broad-based defense of values like family and hard work.

“Culture what you believe, what you value, how you live matters,” Romney told graduates gathered in the football stadium on Liberty University’s campus in the Virginia mountains. “The American culture promotes personal responsibility, the dignity of work, the value of education, the merit of service, devotion to a purpose greater than self, and at the foundation, the preeminence of the family.”

Instead of a red-meat conservative policy speech, Romney discussed his own family and offered a defense of Christianity, saying that “there is no greater force for good in the nation than Christian conscience in action.” Still, he was inclusive: “Men and women of every faith, and good people with none at all, sincerely strive to do right and lead a purpose-driven life,” Romney said.

He had one sustained applause line in a 20-minute speech delivered days after President Barack Obama historically embraced gay marriage. “Marriage is a relationship between one man and one woman,” Romney said to a cheering crowd of students who have to follow a strict code of conduct that considers sex out of wedlock and homosexuality to be sins.

Oliver Wilson of England boosted his hopes of capturing a first European Tour victory in shooting a second-round 65 on Friday to take a one-shot clubhouse lead at the Madeira Islands Open.

Wilson, who has nine second-place finishes in his tour career, moved to a 13-under par 131 with seven birdies on the mountainous Santa da Serra course.

”I again played really nice and no bogeys after two rounds is always very pleasing,” Wilson said. ”I am just trying to play sensible and felt also that I left a few out there.”

Wilson, 31, competed in the 2008 Ryder Cup but lost his main tour card at the end of last year after finishing 130th.

His effort in Madeira is his lowest opening 36-hole tally since a pair of 66s over the first two days of the 2010 Hong Kong Open.

Wilson kick-started his second round in style when he chipped in from 15 feet and then birdied the next from six inches.

”To start in that manner was great and gave me the momentum I needed,” he said. ”But there is a long way to go and the low scoring is going to carry on so I am going to have to keep going forward, and going forward low.”

The Swedish duo of Magnus Carlsson and 19-year old Joakim Lagergren, who both recorded rounds of 66, are joint second on 12 under.

Alameda, Calif., May 10, 2012 – BioTime, Inc. (BTX), a biotechnology company that develops and markets products in the field of regenerative medicine, today reported financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2012 and highlighted recent corporate accomplishments.

Financial Results

Net Loss

Net loss attributable to BioTime, Inc. for the first quarter of 2012 was $5.0 million or $0.10 per share, compared to a net loss of $3.4 million or $0.07 per share for the same period of 2011.

Revenue

Total revenue (including royalties from product sales and other revenue, revenue recognition of deferred license fees and grant income), on a consolidated basis, was $0.6 million in the first quarter of 2012, down $0.2 million from $0.8 million for the same period of 2011. The decrease in revenue year-over-year in the first quarter 2012 is primarily attributable to a decrease in royalties and license fees from the sale of Hextend, BioTime`s proprietary blood plasma volume expander used in surgery and trauma care. In addition, revenue from research products were adjusted downward to reflect a deferral of income as requested by a large pharmaceutical company partner.

Expenses

Total expense for the first quarter of 2012 was $6.5 million, compared to a total expense of $4.9 million for the first quarter 2011. Operating expenses increased $1.6 million year-over-year in the first quarter 2011 due to increased expenses related to the amortization of patent assets from our previous acquisitions, employee compensation and headcount-related costs, patent-related legal fees, and expenses related to our increased efforts in the ReneviaTM (formerly HyStem-Rx) clinical development program slated for human clinical trials this year and the PanC-DxTM diagnostic development program.

Cash Flow

Net cash used in operating activities was $5.7 million for the three months ended March 31, 2012 compared to $3.4 million for the three months ended March 31, 2011, reflecting the hiring of additional staff and increased headcount-related expenses, the payout of annual bonuses, and increased expense related to research and development programs in BioTime`s subsidiaries. Excluding one-time discretionary expenses, which included bonuses and license payments, the net cash used in operations for the three months ended March 31, 2012 was approximately $4.2 million.

Recently the Deseret News printed what to me may be the most terrifying words published in this country since the Intolerable Acts of 1774 (“Government taking a scythe to the Bill of Rights,” George Will, May 6). Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass; Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.; and others have introduced a proposed amendment to the Constitution to restrict the rights of political speech to apply only to individuals and to allow Congress to curtail the collective speech rights of any group with which the Congress does not agree.

By itself, this is monstrous, but the implied extended and unintended consequences of this act would mean the extinction of the Bill of Rights as we know it. Yet besides Will’s column, I haven’t heard one word of criticism of this proposal.

This proposal is outrageous. Yet everyone I talk to says, ” It will never happen”. But the same was probably said just before President Andrew Jackson ignored the Supreme Court and enforced the Indian Removal Act. Or just before Bill Clinton created the Grand Staircase National Monument. The fact that this has been proposed by a ranking member of Congress indicates it is possible.

The leadership of both parties should repudiate this immediately. The sponsors should withdraw the proposal and apologize to the nation for having even considered the notion.

Letter: Free speech must be protected for all individuals, groups

Leftists are killing free speech by calling disagreements hate speech and finding ways to intimidate even those who facilitate debate. But one victim recently fought back, showing us some Americans will stand up for a principle giving truth a chance to emerge. Mark Stevens, I think, is someone to emulate.

Stevens is a smart, tough guy from Queens. His father died when he was 17, leaving the family $84, an amount challenging the youth’s initiative. All Stevens wanted was a chance. This country provided him with plenty, and today he is head of a hugely successful marketing firm, MSCO Inc. It advertises all over the place, including on the Rush Limbaugh radio show in New York.

It’s because of that sponsorship that Stevens encountered the anti-speech “terrorists,” a word he used in an interview with me in Colorado Springs. He was there to speak at a gathering of conservative think tanks about events after Limbaugh employed a nasty name to describe a woman involved in a public issue he had been discussing. It was an inexcusable slur, and Stevens hardly approved, but did not expect what would then come his way.

It was indeed an attack of crazies, people threatening Stevens with “surveillance,” promising busloads of visits to his residence if he did not drop his advertising, telling even the female employees who answered the phone that they were “women haters.”

Stevens pushed back, recognizing from the similarities that this was an organized hit. He went on the Limbaugh show and Fox News shows to denounce these thugs, increased his advertising and found great support in thousands of emails, faithful clients and even people volunteering to protect him.

I guess those trying to scare Stevens into hiding expected a mouse. They got a lion, but in cases of this kind, there are plenty of mice out there, such as Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Kraft Foods, McDonald’s and Wendy’s. Those are some of the companies that abandoned their membership in the American Legislative Exchange Council after extreme leftist groups emitted screeches about its support of such measures as stand-your-ground laws that permit self-defense when someone is trying to kill you.

What the council mostly likes as it effectively lobbies state legislatures is free enterprise, economic growth and jobs, but the left wants government control and portrays the organization in vicious terms.

Meanwhile, more tyranny loyalists have been on the march in the case of Rupert Murdoch, owner of News Corp. and its Fox News in America. In Great Britain, Labour Party members on a parliamentary committee denounced him as unfit to head a multinational news corporation. Hey, says Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, this means the Federal Communications Commission should revoke Fox’s broadcast licenses, another anti-freedom absurdity of extreme leftist making.

At least we are not Denmark, where Lars Hedegaard, head of the Danish Free Press Society, was put on trial for saying in a private exchange that there were a disturbing number of cases of misogyny and family rape in some Muslim areas. In three different court decisions, he was found innocent, then guilty, then in late April finally innocent again of hate speech, for which he could have been imprisoned. Even if he had meant to make his observations public, so what? People cannot talk about such things even if they are true? Somebody’s feelings might be hurt? What about stopping rapes?

Free speech evolved slowly and very, very painfully in the West. Even in America, where it has taken its greatest leaps forward, it has had continuous ups and downs, although we seemed to have arrived at some understanding that this is a supreme freedom without which there is vastly reduced hope for the others. Lately, people who like to call themselves progressives have been playing a frighteningly regressive game with this freedom, but there remains a great hope in America: citizens like Mark Stevens.

GREAT NECK, NY–(Marketwire -05/09/12)- One Liberty Properties, Inc. (OLP), an owner of a geographically diversified portfolio of retail, industrial, office and other properties primarily under long term leases in the United States, today announced operating results for the quarter ended March 31, 2012.

Patrick J. Callan, Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer of One Liberty, stated, “Our first quarter results represent year-over-year growth in rental income primarily driven by our success in capitalizing on investment opportunities in the past year. In the first quarter, we acquired four properties, continuing the pace of activity we achieved in 2011. Occupancy at the end of the quarter was at 97.6%. We continue to see a steady flow of compelling opportunities, using our network of relationships to further strengthen and grow our portfolio in the coming quarters.”

Operating Results:

Revenues for the first quarter of 2012 increased 4.9% to $11.64 million compared to $11.1 million for the first quarter of 2011. The net increase is primarily attributable to the ten properties acquired beginning March 2011.

Total operating expenses for the first quarter of 2012 increased 12.3% to $5.21 million from $4.64 million for the first quarter in the prior year. Approximately $184,000 of the increase is attributable to increased depreciation resulting from property acquisitions and approximately $290,000 is attributable to increased general and administrative expenses, including the quarterly impact of a $125,000 quarterly increase (effective as of January 1, 2011) in the amount payable pursuant to the compensation and services agreement which increase was not reflected in the first quarter of 2011.

Net income attributable to One Liberty in the first quarter of 2012 was $3.22 million or $0.21 per diluted share compared to $2.73 million or $0.21 per diluted share in the first quarter of 2011.

For the quarter ended March 31, 2012, the Company reported Funds from Operations (“FFO”) of $5.57 million, a 7.5% increase from the $5.18 million reported in the first quarter of 2011. FFO was $0.38 per diluted share in the first quarter of 2012 compared to $0.39 per diluted share in the corresponding period of the prior year. A reconciliation of GAAP amounts to non-GAAP amounts is presented with the financial information included later in this release.

The per share net income and FFO results for the three months ended March 31, 2012 take into account the issuance of 2.7 million shares in a public offering completed by the Company in February 2011, while the results for the corresponding period in the prior year only takes such shares into account for a portion of the first quarter of 2011.

Acquisitions:

During the first quarter of 2012, the Company acquired four properties for an aggregate of $9.8 million. The 2012 annual base rent of these properties is approximately $ 769,000.
